Welcome to February! The new month provides plenty to begin with for the Holland Hurricanes, with two Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) sports and six games at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown across three days.
Here is everything you need to know for this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Women’s Volleyball
The women’s volleyball team have their eyes on four wins in a row after a chaotic, but successful road trip to Truro, N.S. and Moncton, N.B. to conclude the month of January.
The squad, carrying an 8-6 record, is set to face the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies on Saturday, Feb. 3 and the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics on Sunday, Feb. 4, with both matches at the McMillan Centre.
STU is 6-7 and tied with UNBSJ for fifth in the conference, four points behind Holland. The ‘Canes have played STU once this season, losing 3-2 on Nov. 25. MSVU is 10-3 and tied with Mount Allison for second in the conference, four points ahead of Holland. This Sunday’s game will be the first between MSVU and Holland this season.
Jenna O’Neill and Morgan White will look to carry their kills and digs momentum from the end of January into the beginning of February. White leads the conference with 1.31 service aces per set. The squad, carrying a 7-4 record, is set to also face the STU Tommies, but will play them twice on Saturday, Feb. 3 and Sunday, Feb. 4.
STU is 6-5 and sits third in the conference, two points behind Holland. The last time the two teams played each other, Holland lost 3-0 in Fredericton, N.B. on Nov. 25.

Women’s Basketball
The women’s basketball team will look to rebound after extending its win streak to three on Saturday, Jan. 27, but then suffering a close loss a day later.
The squad, carrying a 7-7 record, is set to make sure the Crandall University Chargers remain winless, as they come to the McMillan Centre on Friday, Feb. 2 to try and earn their first win of the season in their 13th attempt.
Crandall has yet to challenge Holland after an 83-39 loss in Moncton, N.B. on Nov. 18 and a 79-48 loss at the McMillan Centre on Jan. 14.
Alexa Rancourt will continue her journey of fighting for the top of almost every conference stat, as she is 10 points behind teammate Amy Plaggenhoef for the most points in the conference with 211. She’s also third with 15.1 points per game, second with 10.2 rebounds per game, and second with a 54.8 field goal percentage.

Men’s Basketball
The men’s basketball team was close to a five-game winning streak last weekend but fell short by six points to the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville, N.B. on Sunday, Jan. 28.
Despite the tough ending to the month of January, the team heads into February with four wins in the last five games, a massive improvement after going 3-6 during the first half of the season.
The squad, carrying a 7-7 record, will also welcome the Crandall University Chargers to the McMillan Centre on Friday, Feb. 2. It’ll be a tougher challenge for the men as Crandall is 8-4 and will arrive to Charlottetown with a two-game winning streak. However, the two teams are 1-1 against each other, with Crandall taking the first game 84-65 in Moncton, N.B. on Nov. 15, and Holland winning 86-85 in overtime in Moncton, N.B. on Jan. 14 thanks to a crazy comeback rally.
This Friday’s game will be the first between Holland and Crandall contested on the McMillan Centre court this season.
Bryce Corless, Aaron Simmons, and Zachary Dawkins have been the hottest ‘Canes as of recently, with Corless scoring 49 overall points last weekend (Jan. 27 & 28), Simmons scoring 43 overall points, and Male Athlete of the Week, Zachary Dawkins, scoring 33 overall points. Corless remains the conference’s top point leader with 299 points, 60 more than the second-most. Diangelo Woodside continues to chase after the most rebounds per game in the conference, currently sitting third with 8.8 rebounds per game.
Friday's game time is at 8 p.m.
